HABLab social Justice Statement
Members of the the Habitability, Atmospheres, and Biosignatures Laboratory (HABLab) appreciate the power that astronomy and planetary science have to inspire, but we also recognize that we hurt others by remaining silent on issues that impact the lives and livelihoods of members of our community and nation. Black Americans endure violent and unequal treatment by law enforcement and the justice system, as has been recently re-highlighted by the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Dion Johnson, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery and many others. Members of the HABLab stand as an ally with the Black Lives Matter movement in calling for an end to systematic violence against Black Americans and for repairing the economic inequities that impact communities of color. Members of the HABLab reaffirm that our research group — and our entire field — is made stronger by the inclusion of diverse backgrounds and voices. We strive to make our group a safe and nurturing environment for all members. Finally, HABLab members work to learn about, and correct, inequities in our research group, community, and nation. All lives cannot matter until black lives matter. Dated June 10th, 2020, as part of movements to #Strike4BlackLives, #ShutDownStem, and #ShutDownAcademia. See also Particles for Justice.
